Nintendo's revolutionary Wii has become the fastest-selling home games console in the UK.
According to figures from sales tracking firm Chart Track, Nintendo has sold one million Wii consoles in only 38 weeks.
Sony's PlayStation 2 (PS2) took 50 weeks to hit the one million mark, while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 needed 60 weeks to reach the one million milestone.
"Wii has passed the one million sales figure in just 38 weeks, some 11 weeks faster than the PlayStation 2 and 22 weeks faster than the Xbox 360," Nintendo said in a statement.
The Japanese-based firm added that the sales figures give the Wii about 68 per cent of the British console market.
David Yarnton, general manager at Nintendo UK, said: "The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for video games in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement.”
Nintendo has successfully targeted female and older gamers to the Wii with family-friendly and mind-training games.
The Wii’s revolutionary motion-sensing controller has also proved very popular with gamers.
The price of the system is also much cheaper than Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) and the Xbox 360.
Nintendo says nine million units of the Wii have been sold worldwide since its launch last December.
The company expects to ship 16.5 million Wii consoles by the end of next March, up from a previous prediction of 15 million.
